Tanning Beds and Pregnancy

If you are pregnant and wondering about the consequences of tanning beds and pregnancy then you’re asking a very good question. At this time we have not found studies and the effect of tanning beds on an unborn child, however there are some considerations to take very seriously. The absence of scientific verification on the dangers of a tanning bed and pregnancy is not license to not be concerned, as other important factors from sunbeds exist even when you are not pregnant.

When utilizing a tanning bed, the bed will elicit heat that may affect your body’s core temperature. Doctors believe that sunbeds, hot tubs, saunas and other activities that raise your body’s temperature should be avoided at least during the first few months of pregnancy. This raising of the bodies core temperature is less likely to occur with certain types of indoor tanning, such as tanning booths, canopies or face tanners. If you are going to use a tanning bed then we suggest you consider shorter durations and one of these options rather than a horizontal sunbed.

Clearly, keeping your unborn child safe while in pursuit a summertime glow is first and foremost. Many feel that since tanning beds utilize UVA and UVB rays, mimicking the suns effect, it is the same as tanning outdoor. Not true. Although it is not believed that UV rays reach the child from outside or indoor tanning, it does of course reach the person carrying the child. It cannot be said that these situations are identical, since they are not. At this time, however the consequence is unclear as to whether indoor tanning affects an unborn child.

During pregnancy sensitivity to sun burning may be increased. If you do choose to tan (indoor or outdoor), stay hydrated, cool and be extra cautious not to burn. At the very least, we suggest consulting your doctor for the latest in tanning and pregnancy research data before you make your choice. If it doesn’t feel right, then don’t do it.
