Are Tanning Beds Safe?
Are tanning beds safe? There exists great debate among salon owners and medical professionals who all offer their own opinion on the safety of tanning beds, tanning beds and pregnancy, and tanning beds and skin cancer. There are also many types of tanning beds, some which include UVA only rays, older models that may include some UVB, and new high pressure tanning beds.
UVB rays are known to cause sun burn and the tanning bed industry has worked hard to remove these rays from their beds. Other ‘UVA only’ beds exist, however medical experts believe that some UVA rays are still associated with skin cancer, and tanning beds should be avoided all together. Recently, high pressure tanning beds have made an entry into the industry, offering a UVA bed and one that eliminates some of the UVA rays, believed to be harmful to the skin. As you can see, this question is not an easy one and many factors need to be considered, notably which type of tanning bed is being used (older models are not as safe), the duration, frequency and skin type of the individual using the sunbed.
For those with fair and sensitive skin (skin types one and two) who have a tendency to burn easily and have difficulty tanning, sunbeds may not be the best bet as you are among the most at risk for skin disease. Other sunless tanning options, such as airbrush tanning and sunless tanning lotions (which are FDA approved) may create peace of mind and a sun kissed tan. Salon owners insist the medical communities unfair claims that tanning beds, used even in moderation are harmful and unsafe, while many in the medical community are working to have tanning beds banned all together (except for medical reasons). We suggest you consider skin type, frequency of use, and combining other safe methods of sunless tanning. If you are still unsure and have any concern at all, we suggest you consult your doctor.
