The Controversy Over the Dangers of Tanning Beds & Ultraviolet Rays Continues
The dangers of tanning beds associated with harmful ultraviolet rays and sun tanning have long been advertised in the media. Many conflicting statements are made amongst ‘medical professionals’ leaving the tan seeker confused with conflicting information. Because the dangers of tanning beds and harmful UVA and UVB rays are not immediate, perceived short term gain over long term consequences often out shadow potential belief in harm.
Tanning salons argue that more controlled exposure to ultra violet light minimizes the dangers of tanning beds over outdoor sun tanning. Ultraviolet rays are separated into three categories by wavelength. UVC is the shortest wavelength and is largely filtered out by the ozone (and would pose danger to all living things). UVB and UVA rays are found in modern tanning beds and booths. Modern suntanning equipment produces just enough UVB rays to trigger the production of Melanin, responsible for the tanning response.
To protect yourself from harmful side effects, limit your exposure to avoid sun burns, use goggles to protect your eyes and consider your medical history and potential side effects of tanning beds. If you have a history of skin disease, are undergoing treatment for lupus, or diabetes, or are susceptible to cold sores these conditions may be aggravated by tanning devises. Consult your physician if you are unsure.
Many tanning beds are currently designed according to the specifications of Dr Freiderich Wolff, founder of the popular tanning beds the ‘Wolff System” with the majority of rays believed ‘less harmful’ UVA rays and just enough UVB rays to start the production of Melanin. However, it is believed that skin damage from ultraviolet rays builds up with continued exposure, and dangers of tanning beds are no exception.
In addition to sunburn, premature aging, potential increased risk of skin cancer, and a weakened immune system my result from dangers associated with ultra violet light.
