Sunless Tanning Lotions ~ A Very “Cool” Way to Tan With a Tingle!

Love to look like you spend your days at the beach in the sun instead of in a stuffy little cubical? You can still look hot and be cool! Sunless tanning lotions foams, and tan towels may be just what the doctor ordered to help you achieve a healthy tan glow. Tanning with a self tanning lotion is the easiest way to go from pale to pecan in the privacy of your own home.

Sunless foams, towels and lotions contain DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, a colorless chemical that interacts with the skin’s amino acids to produce a color change that lasts about five to seven days. It is the same ingredient used in tanning sprays and mists. Don’t worry—DHA is not absorbed into the body. The U.S. FDA has approved DHA for external use.

Self-tanning lotions are different from traditional suntan lotions and oils that enhance the outdoor, sun-induced tanning process, and self-tanning lotions (usually) do not contain sunscreen. Sunscreen of at least SPF 15 is still needed outside to protect your skin from the sun and harmful UV rays.

During your online tanning lotion shopping trips you will see products called bronzers and accelerators. There are two kinds of bronzers: one is simply a bronze-tinted makeup product that makes the skin appear tan wherever it is applied; it washes off. The other type is a bronze-tinted self-tanning cream or lotion. The benefit of tinted self-tanning is that you can see the area you’ve covered—there’s no guesswork.

Accelerators are claimed to speed up the tanning process. Whether in pill form or oil- or cream-based, accelerators contain a substance called tyrosine, which many believe is effective in helping DHA work faster. (Neither form has yet been proven to the satisfaction of the FDA~yet) Accelerators often include a tingle sensation
