Tanning Bed Bulbs — The FAQ's About Tan Bed Bulbs

There’s no mystery when it comes to tanning bed bulbs (also called tanning bed lamps). The principle on which a tan bed bulb or lamp operates is fairly simple: They are fluorescent bulbs adapted for the purpose of simulating the sun’s rays, resulting in tanning of the skin. Like the sun, tanning lamps can also burn skin if they aren’t used properly.

Here is how a tanning lamp works: The sun emits ultraviolet, or UV, radiation, which consists of light waves that cannot be seen. Normal daily exposure to UV radiation produces vitamin D, which is beneficial to our bodies. There are two different wavelengths of UV light; one is called UVA and the other, UVB. UVA rays stimulate the production of melanin, which darkens the color of skin, while UVB rays can burn the skin. A tanning lamp is a specially engineered fluorescent lamp that mimics the sun’s rays. Types of tanning bulbs vary; they are designed to offer differing combinations of UVA and UVB rays. Gradual exposure to UV light enables the skin to tan without burning, whether the UV light is produced by the sun or by a tanning bulb.

Fluorescent tanning lamps are considered “low-pressure” bulbs. Newer quartz models are high-pressure. There are notable differences between a low-pressure and high-pressure tan bed bulb in the proportion of UVA and UVB rays produced by each, and in the duration of exposure and the frequency required for maximum tanning.

Tanning beds and booths use several bulbs—anywhere from six to 48; the number is determined by the product’s design. A tanning bed bulb also comes in differing lengths, life expectancies, and reflectivity levels.

Manufacturers are specific about what types of replacement bulbs are required for optimal operation of their tanning equipment. We suggest you follow their recommendations—which can usually be found right on the bed or booth—exactly. Don’t be tempted by cheaper low-quality bulbs. When it comes to tanning, it won’t pay to cut corners. Be sure to rotate your sun bed lamps just before it nears the end of it's life duration to ensure and even tan.
